Universal Café Chair & Table Base
The chair was developed for a site-specific project, the Universal Café (designed and built by Jeff and Larissa Sand). The intent was to create a robust yet light version of what is essentially a folding French café chair. Cast aluminum and formed maple plywood are selected for their inherent strength but also for providing sculptural freedom. It is from that freedom that the chair's award winning unique lines and forms were created. Recently the chair was re-designed and developed for production. The chair has its home in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and will be available for sale in 2003 in the Design Within Reach catalog. Also pictured is the Universal Café table base.
